Rwanda has had one of the worst genocides in the world. In the aftermath of the genocide, 1.7 million Hutu (Rwanda government) fled across the border into neighboring Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo).the legand of genocide continued to haunt the national psyche. The UN tribunal sentenced Jean Kambanda, the former prime minister of Rwanda, to life in prison for his part in the 1994 genocide. He became the first person in the history of the world to be convicted for the crime of genocide.
